Detailed information
Prosthetics is a branch of dentistry dealing with reconstruction and filling of single or multiple cavities. The goal of is a branch of dentistry dealing with reconstruction and filling of single or multiple cavities. The goal of prosthetic treatment is not only reconstruction of lost oral cavity functions, like speaking or chewing, but also improving patient’s comfort through increasing the aesthetic feeling. It is important that dentures are properly planned and made, so they will not differ from natural dentition.
Not considering aesthetic factors, the loss of teeth may cause many dysfunctions of mastication system. Neglecting treatment, even after losing one tooth, may lead to “lengthening” of opposite teeth, shifting and turning of those teeth which surround the gap and bone loss. This, in time, may cause the loss of another teeth or the creation of abnormalities in temporomandibular joints.Modern dental is a branch of dentistry dealing with reconstruction and filling of single or multiple cavities. Modern dental prosthetics uses the newest technological and material discoveries, but not forfeiting from traditional solutions, such as the use of noble metals (e.g. gold or platinium).
Prosthodontic treatment uses fixed dentures (prosthetic bridges, crowns, dental veneers) or removable dentures (cast partials, nylon dentures, full or partial acrylic dentures or splint dentures). There is a possibility of combining two kinds of dentures.
The course of prosthetic treatment:
-The first visit involves interviewing patient to learn his hygiene habits, the cause of losing teeth, patient’s needs and requirements, but also any conditions that may have an important influence on the course of treatment. The next stage is conducting necessary examinations: checking the state of dentition, gums and occlusion, as well as the arrangement of any cavities. X-rays are also a necessary examination. During the first visit doctor also takes the impressions of dentition to create models. On the basis of those examinations a treatment plan is designed.
-During the next visit patient is informed about the plan of treatment. A doctor presents possible solutions and their advantages and disadvantages, then patient decides upon proposed treatment.
-Before the proper treatment starts, it may be unavoidable to conduct pre-prosthodontontic treatment. It involves preparing the oral cavity through extraction of teeth hindering or preventing the prosthetic treatment. Those teeth are unsuitable for reconstruction, root canal treatment, curing tooth decay, cleaning or correcting occlusal abnormalities.
-The right treatment proceeds according to the plan designed with the patient.
-Control visits are essential for prosthetic treatment. During visits the doctor assesses the denture’s functionality and the changing state of the oral cavity. Doctor also repairs and corrects dentures, if such a need arises.
